What is pharmacovigilance?
Pharmacovigilance is the science and activities related to the detection, evaluation, understanding and prevention of adverse reactions or any other health problems related to drugs or vaccines.
What are the objectives of pharmacovigilance?
- Improve patient care and safety in relation to the use of medications and all medical interventions.
- Improve public health and safety in relation to the use of medicines.
- Detect problems related to medication use and communicate findings in a timely manner.
- Contribute to the risk-benefit assessment, efficacy and risk of drugs, leading to the prevention of harm and maximization of benefits.
- Promote the safe, rational and more effective (including cost-effective) use of medicines.
- Promote understanding, education and training in pharmacovigilance and its effective communication to the public.
